Australian clubs should be allowed to operate single-sex sport without the fear of legal action being taken against them, according to Liberal Senator Claire Chandler.
This week Senator Chandler introduced the “Save Women’s Sport Bill,” which is designed to help sporting organisations restrict women’s events to those who were born biologically female.
The bill has been criticised by trans-right groups, who claim the bill discriminates against transgender individuals.
Senator Chandler told Sky News Australia the private members bill is her attempt to bring clarity to an important "women’s rights issue."
"The question that everyone should be asking themselves when they’re thinking about this issue and when they’re thinking about whether or not they will be supporting my bill," she said.
"Do you agree Australian women and girls have the right to single sex sport?
"I think most common sense Australians would answer yes to that very simple question."
