Sky News host Chris Smith has backed calls for the government to enact short-term emergency changes to pension laws so retirees can plug labour gaps and "rescue the economy".
It comes as National Cabinet on Thursday signed off on changes to isolation requirements for essential workers in an effort to keep supply chains intact and plug gaps in the workforce.
Mr Smith pointed to National Seniors Australia, who called for the pension to be redesigned to allow retirees to get back to work without being penalised.
"Why are we not thinking about emergency changes to the pension, in order to get retirees into these sectors, to plug the gaps," Mr Smith said.
"It will add to GDP … and take pressure off the need, for high migration levels.
"This concept has enormous potential in the medium term, but right now, this could be used short term, to help solve supply chain shortages."
