Australia will produce millions of mRNA vaccines a year under a multi-billion dollar deal secured by the federal and Victorian governments.
The agreement with Moderna will create Australia’s first mRNA manufacturing facility in Victoria – and will position the nation as the main respiratory vaccine producer in the region.
The facility will also allow priority access to non-pandemic vaccines such as influenza doses.
Under the $2 billion agreement, Australia will produce 25 million doses a year from 2024 – with the capacity to ramp up production to 100 million doses for potential future pandemics.
The Victorian government expects the deal will create 500 jobs during construction – and 500 ongoing roles.
