‘We need to properly resource our security agencies’ amid threat of post-COVID crime wave

Labor MP Joel Fitzgibbon says Australia needs to “properly resource our security agencies” amid Australian Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw issuing a stark warning about reopening international borders.

Mr Kershaw warned of the borders reopening leading to an increase in crime such as a wave of drug smuggling and human trafficking.

“Something we need to deal with, we need to properly resource our security agencies and we need to give them the legislative backing they need to take meaningful action,” Mr Fitzgibbon told Sky News host Peta Credlin.

“But it reminds us that the real work is done not so much at the border or once the illicit substance is inside the border, but this work is done beyond the border.

“I hope that we are ready.”
