Trump’s family separation policy was misrepresented in the media: Kirstjen Nielsen

Former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen says the Trump administration’s policy of separating children from parents at the US-Mexico border if caught entering the country illegally was besieged by media “misinformation”.

“It’s very frustrating that that happened because I think it clouded some of the real underlying issues that we need to fix in the United States when it comes to a very broken immigration system,” Ms Nielsen told Sky News Australia.

Ms Nielsen said immigration policy in the US is “a very complex issue” and “something that needs to be fixed”.

“The very difficult, challenging and heart-wrenching part of the story is that ultimately the United States’ government did not have the resources to quickly reunite the children with their parents.”
