Nationals hand over list of net zero demands to PM

The National Party has handed their list of demands to Prime Minister Scott Morrison on the back of five days of intense discussions over the prospect of setting a net zero emissions target.

The wish list includes a trigger fuse called a "Regional Socioeconomic Safeguard", which would be inserted into any climate pledge the prime minister makes at Glasgow, allowing for a pause mechanism if needed.

There will also be a push for targeted financial support and a transition package for mining, agriculture, and manufacturing.

The Nationals are seeking guarantees that regional sectors can continue to operate, and they will not be phased out.

The prime minister will now look over the list of demands as Nationals MPs prepare to meet again on Sunday.

Any agreement will go to Cabinet and will be discussed on Wednesday before Mr Morrison flies to Glasgow for the COP26 Climate Change Conference.
