NSW new emissions target an ‘embarrassment’ for federal government

The Australia Institute’s Director Ben Oquist says the ambitious emissions reduction target set by the NSW government is an “embarrassment” for the federal government, who remain bitterly divided over a commitment to net zero by 2050.

Mr Oquist said the state government’s move was a “policy and political bombshell” which has “landed right in Barnaby Joyce’s lap, and the Prime Minister’s”.

“Yes, Scott Morrison is going to adopt a net zero by 2050 target, but really, the world has moved on from that,” Mr Oquist told Sky News Australia.

“Net zero by 2050 is done by the rest of the world, and Scott Morrison of course has to do that, he will do that and he will announce it very soon.

“All the while, while expanding fossil fuels development, people will know is a bit of a fraud.”
