‘The time is right’: Fitzgibbon to retire from parliament

Labor MP Joel Fitzgibbon has told Sky News Australia the time is right for him to leave after 25 years, holding the seat of Hunter.

“I effectively made this decision on election night 2019 when the defeat was so devastating,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.

“I now feel very confident Labor can win the next election under Anthony Albanese, and I’m more confident than ever that Labor can hold the seat of Hunter without me.”

Mr Fitzgibbon also said the party moved too far to the left and took its focus off many who formed the traditional base.

“I think that lesson has been learnt, and I think we’re better placed now.”
