AASW Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Director Professor Susan Green says the COVID-19 outbreak in Wilcannia and other parts of Western New South Wales is a “perfect storm”.
“It’s a little bit like the horse has bolted, and we’re trying now to shut the gate,” Professor Green told Sky News Australia.
“We have to do everything we can to keep as many people safe as we can and deal with the health crisis that’s unfolding in front of us.
“But we also need to learn from this lesson, and we need to move as soon as possible on increasing the size of the health services in regional areas and ensuring that people have access to adequate housing."
Motor homes will be operational in the Far West next week to help these communities deal with the burgeoning COVID-19 outbreak, which Professor Green says will assist “a very, very little bit”.
