AEC must ensure lobby groups comply with electoral laws to prevent a ‘dirty election’

NSW Liberal Senator Andrew Bragg says the Australian Electoral Commission must ensure lobby groups, who are raising money to target the seats of Liberal MPs, comply with electoral laws to prevent a “dirty election”.

Concerns have been raised about more than 40 groups which have been pushing to oust dozens of Liberal MPs around the country, with many of the donors being anonymous.

Senator Bragg said a number of the groups have not been complying with the electoral laws in relation to the authorisation of electoral materials and the disclosure of contributions.

“They could be taking money from foreigners in breach of the law; we just don’t know,” he told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
