Opening up at 80 per cent vaccination rate something premiers ‘need to deliver on’

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce says he is hopeful the state premiers stick to the national plan which was agreed to at National Cabinet.

Mr Joyce said he wanted to ask premiers if Australia does not open 80 per cent, what the pathway out of the pandemic was.

“If we don’t open up at the 80 per cent, what are we looking for, how can we open up, what’s the alternative, are we going to remain a hermit nation forever? I don’t think that would be fair to the population,” he told Sky News Australia.

Mr Joyce said Qantas had recently launched a “very emotional” advertisement showing vaccinated travellers reuniting with their families and the reception to it from the public was “phenomenal”.

“It shows that, I think, the population want to see an end of this, a path out of this, they want to have hope for the future,” he said.

“Opening up the borders once we get to 80 per cent I think is something they’ve committed to the general population, it’s something they need to deliver on.”
