Waiting lists have ‘blown out’ for psychiatrists

Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists President Vinay Lakra says waiting lists have “blown out” for a lot of psychiatrists amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It is very difficult to get someone to appointments,” he told Sky News host Chris Kenny.

“I want to emphasise that some of these things are not necessarily due to COVID, COVID has just amplified that problem for us.

“We’ve always had a shortage of psychiatrists across the country … and because of COVID there is of course increased demand for mental health services.”
