Pentagon ‘does not know’ how many American soldiers are still in Afghanistan

Former Pentagon Adviser Jason Israel says the total withdrawal of United States troops was popular but there is a question as to whether “continued presence” would have been better for Afghanistan.

Mr Israel said in the US there was a “lot of political popularity in a complete withdrawal of Afghanistan” by the American public and it is now unclear how many troops are still posted and need to be evacuated.

“There were clearly miscalculations which led to how rapidly this occurred, put us in this situation we are in where we actually do not know the number of Americans and the number of Afghan allies that need to be withdrawn,” he told Sky News Australia.

“The Pentagon is focussing on the number per day, they’re shooting for 5,000 per day, of being able to get out but don’t know how much days that will take.”
