‘Customers may experience some delays’ amid spike in Australia Post volume

Online shopping is booming amid widespread lockdowns with Australia Post reporting parcel volumes are currently the same as Christmas last year.

Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood says despite the spike in parcels, a problem has arisen with the postal service.

“Australia Post’s key state-of-the-art parcel distribution facility is smack-bang in the middle of the COVID hotspot area in Sydney,” Mr Greenwood said.

“It’s not the only one – DHL has giant warehouses in the area, there’s also distribution centres for Coles, Woolworths, Ikea, Bunnings, Big W and JB Hi-Fi.

“Australia Post’s Chullora bulk lodgment centre was completed just two years ago, and it’s designed to cope with the boom in online shopping – it can handle as many as 500,000 parcels a day. It is the biggest of its type in the southern hemisphere.

“Business Weekend understands the centre has been directly affected by the COVID outbreaks, adding to the problem of processing the Christmas size parcel delivery volume.”

In a statement, Australia Post confirmed customers “may” experience delays.
