Victoria faces statewide lockdown

Regional Victoria is set to go back into lockdown while Melbourne is facing new COVID restrictions after senior government ministers met late last night to put all options on the table.

This comes as the state recorded 55 new cases on Friday, with half of those cases infectious while in the community and six still a mystery to health officials.

The Victorian government says if cases continue to climb the state could be on the brink of a third wave.

In Melbourne tougher restrictions could include childcare only being open for essential workers, a ban on construction and a ban on takeaway food and coffee.

Currently, it also seems as if the AFL Grand Final may be off the table.
