Australia needs to help ‘those who gave us assistance’ in Afghanistan

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese says he welcomes the first mission into Kabul to rescue Australians and Afghan nationals from the Taliban.

“I thank our defence force who are bravely going into what is a dangerous circumstance in order to evacuate Australian citizens and others including hopefully all of, we hope, the interpreters,” he told Sky News Australia.

“This is vital, this is a matter of Australia’s obligations that we have which is a moral one but it’s also a national security issue.”

Mr Albanese said Australia had to provide support to “those people who gave us assistance,” now that they need it.
