Afghan president takes refuge in the United Arab Emirates

The ousted president of Afghanistan is taking refuge in the United Arab Emirates, according to officials from the Gulf nation.

Ashraf Ghani fled Afghanistan as the Taliban advanced on Kabul over the weekend – saying he left to prevent a “flood of bloodshed”.

The UAE’s foreign ministry said the country had welcomed Mr Ghani and his family on humanitarian grounds.

Mr Ghani came into office in 2014 and was re-elected in February 2020.
