Work begins on major Gold Coast tourism project

Gold Coast tourism has received a much-needed boost with the installation of a new multimillion- dollar diving attraction, dubbed, ‘Wonder Reef’.

The biggest floating crane in the country will lower pyramid structures to the sea floor, secured to nine hollow sculptures designed specifically to attract marine life.

Wonder Reef is the first major tourism attraction to the Gold Coast in more than a decade.

The world-first purpose-built buoyant reef is expected to bring $32 million to the Gold Coast over the next 10 years and attract 160,000 new visitors.

There are also considerations for further plans, with the possibility of an underwater memorial garden.

There will be eight months of monitoring and testing before Wonder Reef opens to the public next year.
