Victoria-wide lockdown was a ‘cautious decision to make’

Liberal Senator James Paterson says the decision to put all of Victoria in lockdown is a “cautious decision to make”, and the loosening of lockdown on the regions is an appropriate move from the state government.

“I do welcome the Victorian government’s decision today to release regional Victoria from lockdown, it’s very clear there are no cases in regional Victoria and therefore it is a safe thing to do,” he told Sky News Australia.

Mr Paterson said although the Delta variant was a more transmissible variant, if there was to be an “evidence-based response”, lockdowns would need to be applied accordingly.

“We should lock down areas with a demonstrated need to lock down, not just a possibility that they might need to be locked down,” he said.
