Safe Work Laboratories Managing Director Mal Beacham says there’s been a recent development of "rapid PCR testing" which can return a COVID result in 2-3 hours; killing queue time at testing sites and aiding mobility between state borders.
"There is the classic PCR test which is currently being done by the tens of thousands," he told Sky news host Chris Kenny.
"But more recently there was a development of what is called rapid PCR testing which is still PCR but can get a result in 2-3 hours."
Mr Beecham said while most of the medical community in Australia would argue PCR is the "gold standard" it does have a time constraint of 24-48 hours.
He said his company had suggested to Health Minister Greg Hunt "rapid PCR testing" using "pop up laboratories"– which could be used at state borders to enable people to move around Australia.
